  KaLan - 2th Prize
Obesity has seen a significant increase worldwide, even in countries where general nutritional levels are low. In 2006 the WHO announced that 1.2 billion people worldwide suffer from obesity and overweight. In Mexico alone, obesity accounts for the death of almost 200,000 people a year.

‘KaLan’ is a public service that promotes the timely detection of anomalies in blood pressure, body temperature, and fat levels. It can be installed in public places such as office buildings, hospitals, healthcare centers, gyms and spas, train and bus stations and airports.

‘KaLan’ invites the user to put his/her index and middle fingers in the slot in the front cover. By means of a small metallic press, sensors and an infrared thermometer, it then takes readings of the values in question and records the results. The front cover can rotate 360°, allowing the user to find a comfortable position in which to access the slot.

After displaying the results on the screen, ‘KaLan’ offers the option of sending them to an email address or a cell phone, enabling the user to save the results or forward them to his/her doctor.

  Finding of the jury:
This proposal addresses a serious healthcare concern, the prevention of obesity. It achieves an easy-to-use design that offers the user important physiological information. As a product, it also serves as a tool for public education with regard to this important health maintenance matter.
