Questions to Benjamin Holch |
| |
How should a young designer approach a new assignment?
Young designers should think without any restrictions and barriers. In what kind of field and context is the project located, who is it designed for, when and where will it be used? Choose from a large amount of collected information the most important ones, arrange them and start to sketch!

What advice do you have in general for young designers?
Today, the time from a briefing to the presentation is very limited. Make the most of your time by verifying all your data about materials, forms, colours, technical restrictions and socio-cultural aspects, thoughts, concerns and ideas to narrow it down to a clear, understandable design.

Design Awards/ the BraunPrize |
| |
What role do design prizes play in general, and the BraunPrize in particular in terms of fostering design talents?
Design-Prizes give a good overview about the scene and what’s hip. The BraunPrize has a special role because its participants are totally free in what they want to send in. If you see how many students and young designers from all over the world send in their designs and ideas this year you can clearly see the enjoyment which these people have in selling themselves, in competing against the others. The BraunPrize provides a good forum for young designers to present to a big audience of experienced and professional people their fantastic ideas and how they want to change the world.

What will be your approach when evaluating the submissions?
I’m very excited to see a variety of interesting and new things. I hope we’ll get to see studies that go away from the things known today. I’m interested in the background, the story behind a design and how the designer communicates all the relevant aspects of a good design via his work.

What are your personal sources of inspiration? How do you work on new ideas?
I keep my eyes always open. Sources of inspiration are everywhere to be found. Little details on things or big impressions by nature –there are no limits. A designer is a collector walking around finding valuable things. I’m thinking around a problem or a task and play around with my thoughts. I like to open the room completely for inspiration and information before I narrow it down to a single statement.

What is your personal definition of “good design” and its role in your life?
A piece of good design makes me happy for a long time. The good mix of materials, surfaces, colours and finally a great form give a product its soul. Good design doesn’t always have a big benefit but maybe a bigger emotional appreciation by the user. Others stand out with a clear and simple statement, free of any critics and are logical in themselves.
