How should a young designer approach a new assignment?
Young Designers have a dream. Product Designers at least want to realize meaningful products which improve people’s lives. They strive for a better product culture and believe in values for a better world. And the world badly needs design thinking. But I don’t want designers only to dream. I would like them to take influence in a convincing way with talent, personal standing, professional skills & attitudes and caring for people. This is the chemistry how designers should approach their assignment.

What advice do you have in general for young designers?
They need to feel for themselves if they are talented enough for design. In the tough and competing design world of today and in the future, they need to have lots of attitudes which they cannot learn or train that much. They should clearly understand what it means to be a designer and to work in this profession.

What role do design prizes play in general, and the BraunPrize in particular in terms of fostering design talents?
Competition is part of our life. Not only designers should be trained to compete with others and assess their capabilities. But they should consciously look for which Design Prize they apply for. Some of the organizers are interested in grabbing new ideas in a cheap way. The ICSID endorsement is a valuable “quality mark” for open design competitions. Being finalist in renowned competitions like the BraunPrize helps starters a lot for their careers. Some of them we did employ in our Design Team.

What will be your approach when evaluating the submissions?
First of all, we will be reading and trying to understand each submitted project. We discuss the contents within the Jury and align them with the official assessment criteria. The focus will be on Design and all its aspects, on technology, how convincingly the product performs its function and usability, the benefit the product provides for the consumer. People must be seen to be both the starting point for the product concept and the focus of its realization.

What are your personal sources of inspiration? How do you work on new ideas?
My personal source of inspiration is the whole world. Being open for the diversity of thinking is highly important to me. It is the base for being able to synthesize new ideas and generate new, distinctive design approaches. It is design thinking and therefore a part of me.

What is your personal definition of “good design” and its role in your life?
Design belongs to my self-understanding, it is part of my personal life style. I cannot live in a cluttered and visually loud environment. I need a holistic and people-minded design thinking. Good design is when it causes a good visual or haptic experience, when it causes relevant positive emotions, when it adds value, when it functions well, when it is understandable, when it is thoroughly detailed, when it is honest in promises, when it is in line with global valid values, when it is made with people in mind. Good design creates Magic.
