  Altos
The primary function of ‘Altos’ is to simplify the process of dissecting the internal mammary artery. This procedure is indispensable in the initial phase of cardiac revascularization surgery, which is used to treat coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD is one of the leading causes of death worldwide.

The ‘Altos’ design meets all the requirements for this type of surgery:

  1. ergonomic design for operational comfort for the surgeon

  1. an anthropometric method, i.e., adapting as closely as possible to the anatomy of the patient and minimizing pain

  1. exposition grade, providing good opening or visibility range to aid the surgeon in his/her work

  1. adaptability to varying patient conditions and the special needs of each surgery

  1. ease of use and a practical installation

There are several similar products on the market, but the majority of them include only some of the required features while lacking others.

‘Altos’ is the first radial retractor-elevator and, due to its characteristics, offers maximum exposure and minimal invasion. It adapts easily to any breastbone and surgical requirements.

  Finding of the jury:
The medical field, especially the area of surgery, offers a great opportunity for industrial designers to contribute to the enhancement of patients’ quality of life and to save lives. The jury selected this project because the design solution represents a notable improvement in the instruments that up to now have been utilized for this surgery. This proposal integrates the required precision and functional efficiency with notable advantages of use for the surgeon and patient. ‘Altos’ successfully balances functionality, technology and user factors.
